About the BMW i7

The BMW i7 is the brand’s flagship all-electric luxury sedan, blending cutting-edge EV technology with the opulence of the 7 Series. Introduced in 2022, the i7 competes with models like the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Lucid Air, and Tesla Model S.

Equipped with dual electric motors and xDrive all-wheel drive, the i7 xDrive60 produces 544 hp (400 kW) and 745 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. It features a 101.7 kWh battery, providing a WLTP-estimated range of up to 625 km. Fast charging capabilities allow it to gain 170 km of range in just 10 minutes at a DC fast charger (195 kW max).

Inside, the i7 is packed with high-tech luxury, including a curved 14.9-inch iDrive 8 display, a 31-inch BMW Theatre Screen for rear passengers, crystal controls, and ambient lighting with dynamic LED interactions. The optional Executive Lounge package adds reclining rear seats with footrests, making it a true chauffeur-level experience.

With its ultra-quiet cabin, seamless power delivery, and advanced technology, the BMW i7 sets a new benchmark for luxury electric sedans, offering a balance of performance, sustainability, and first-class comfort.

Common BMW i7 problems

The BMW i7 features iDrive 8 with a 31-inch Theatre Screen, but some owners have reported system lag, unresponsive touch controls, and occasional crashes. Problems with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity have also been noted. BMW frequently releases software updates to address these issues, and a system reboot can often resolve temporary glitches.
The BMW i7 supports up to 195 kW DC fast charging, but some owners report that real-world charging speeds fluctuate due to battery temperature and charger compatibility. In cold weather, charging may take longer than expected. Using preconditioning features before fast charging can help optimise speed.
While BMW claims a WLTP range of up to 625 km, some drivers find that cold temperatures significantly reduce battery efficiency, sometimes dropping range by 20-30%. Using seat and steering wheel heaters instead of cabin heating and driving in Eco Pro mode can help extend range.
The i7 comes with adaptive air suspension, which is generally smooth, but some drivers notice occasional stiffness over uneven surfaces. Others report that the suspension can be slow to adjust, particularly when transitioning from Comfort to Sport mode. BMW dealerships can update the adaptive suspension software to improve performance.
The active steering and lane-keeping assist systems can feel overly intrusive, especially in tight urban environments. Some drivers find that the steering assist makes unnecessary corrections, particularly on well-marked roads. Adjusting settings or disabling lane-keeping assist in certain situations can improve the driving experience.
The i7’s large glass surfaces, touchscreen panels, and piano black interior trim can quickly accumulate fingerprints and smudges, which are particularly visible in direct sunlight. Regular cleaning with microfibre cloths and screen-safe cleaners can help maintain a clean appearance.
The 31-inch BMW Theatre Screen in the rear of the i7 is a standout feature, but some owners report screen flickering, slow response times, or system freezes when switching between apps or streaming content. BMW is expected to address these issues with software updates.
The i7 is over 5.3 meters long, making parking and manoeuvring in tight city spaces challenging. While rear-wheel steering helps reduce the turning radius, some drivers find it still requires extra caution in narrow streets and parking garages.
